At risk of loss due to continued interbreeding with the Nganda and Ankole cattle; the breed is now considered vulnerable (Rege, 1999).
Maintained by the Kunam tribe in the Lango and Kaberamaido areas of the Teso district of central Uganda.
Recent history and classification of the Kyoga cattle is uncertain. The interbreeding with the Nganda and Ankole cattle led to identification of the Kyoga as sanga type (Felius, 1995). However, Rege and Tawah (1999) argue that phenotypically the Kyoga is not different from other zebu of the Lake region.
